chapter 5

It had gone beyond her, beyond everything. He had thrown himself into it with a creative passion, adding to it all the time, decking it out with every bright feather that drifted his way. No amount of fire or freshness can challenge what a man will store up in his ghostly heart.” – Nick

  1. This means that everything Gatsby was doing to make Daisy fall in love with him again, the lies he was telling, carried on much further than Daisy. He made up all those stories to everybody, until nobody quite new what was true and what was not. All the effort into trying to impress Daisy and now, everybody, had become his life style.
  2. Gatsby became very passionate about the things he would do, parties he would host and he would do it in such a way of his own so that nobody would question him, they would rather just enjoy the ride. Spicing everything up with his own touches of colour and joy. If any opportunity would come up, Gatsby would take it and use it for another event in his life.
  3. Gatsby’s heart was left broken, empty after Daisy left him. By filling his life with the fun stories, it distracts him from the truth, the truth that he unadmittidly is scared to face. His life is all a lie, a way of trying to get back what he lost many years ago, Daisy. There’s nothing he can say or do that will actually change that for him. I feel as if Gatsby has controlled everybody else’s perspective on him, made them believe all the incredible things he’s claiming to do but he can’t change his own mind about himself, that his one goal in life is to get back Daisy. Without Daisy, everything else is pointless.
